- John was born 11 September 1777 in Northampton County, PA. He was baptised 16 November 1777 under his German name Johannes in Salem Lutheran and Reformed Church in Moore Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The sponsors at his baptism were his grandparents, Adam and Clara Meister.
John was the sixth child of George and Maria Eva "Eve" Meister Bitz, later spelled Beets. When he was seven years old the family moved to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Then in 1792 they moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia. In 1798 the family moved again to Hawkins County, Tennessee.
John married Peggy or Polly around 1805 in Tennessee. They had two sons that we know of, George and James.
John is listed in the 1850 mortality schedule of Tennessee as dying of "old age at 86 years old." However his real age was 73. His burial place is unknown.
