Lt. Col. Cadwallader Jones (b. ca. 1652/3 d. aft. 1694/5) is a bit outside the time limits for this list, but some of what follows does relate to pre 1600 issues so I thought I'd go ahead and respond to the list just in case anyone else is interested in the subject.

There are several well-documented sources for information on this Cadwallader Jones. Perhaps the most important are a series of articles which appeared in *The Virginia Genealogist* in the mid-1990s beginning with Henry G. Taliaferro's "Who Was Catherine, The Wife of Colonel Cadwallader Jones of Virginia?" (vol. 38, no. 3, July-Sept, 1994). Taliaferro makes a very persuasive case for dentifying Jones' wife Catherine as Catherine DEBNAM, daughter of William and Catherine Debnam and widow of Robert Taliaferro. This is of particular interest since another
daughter of William and Catherine Debnam is thought to be Mary, wife of Maj. Lawrence SMITH (a descendant of William I "the Lion" of Scotland).

While it is true that Lt. Col. Cadwallader Jones was the son of merchant/planter named Richard Jones (d. 1652/3) , his mother is known to have been Frances BALDWIN (ca. 1614-1668), who's first husband was Col. Richard TOWNSHEND/TOWNSEND (ca. 1606-1650/1). Another useful source with all the details about the Townshend/Baldwin marriage, etc., is the entry on the Townshends in Jester & Hiden's *Adventurers of Purse and Person.* Anyone inetersted in the life and career of Lt. Col. Cadwallader Jones should also check out *William Fitzhugh and His Chesapeake World,
1676-1701* (Chapel Hill: 1963) which includes several letters detailing Jones' activities and a 1922 article, "Western Explorations in Virginia Between Lederer and Spotswood" which was published in the *Virginia
Magazine of History and Biography* (vol. 30).

Finally it is believed (although I'm not sure how well documented this is) that Richard Jones (d. 1652/3) was indeed the son of an earlier Cadwallader Jones (d. 1672) of Greenham, in the parish of Ashbrittle, co. Somerset who
first shows up in 1642 as the Collector General of Customs under Charles I in 1642/3. Since this Cadwallader JONES is known to have married Anne BLUET sometime between 1643 and 1646, however, an unknown first wife must have been the mother of Richard JONES (d. 1652/3). As a result,
descendants of Lt. Col. Cadwallader JONES of Virginia do not share the royal descent mentioned below. It is also probably worth noting that the only documented child of Lt. Col. Cadwallader Jones and his wife Catherine (Debnam) is their daughter Frances who married Robert SLAUGHTER, Jr., of
Essex County, Virginia.

Finally, there are some interesting clues which might lead to information on the ancestry of both of Lt. Col. Cadwallader Jones' parents. Frances BALDWIN is know to be the sister of a Robert BALDWIN of Great Stoughton,
Huntingdonshire (as well as William of Glapthorne/Glassthorne, Northants.)
-- perhaps descended from a 16th century couple named John BALDWIN and Agnes GODFREY of Great Stoughton. There is also a claim that the elder Cadwallader JONES "belonged to the family of Rhirid Flaidd" -- according to an article on the JONES family in the NEHGR in July 1959.

Colonel Cadwallader Jones was an Indian trader, an explorer into the western regions of Virginia, a sheriff of Old Rappahannock County, and in 1689, while in London, was commissioned Governor of the Bahaman Islands, taking office in 1690 and holding it, amid some controversy, until 1694, after which he returned to Virginia. His whereabouts after 1699 remain unknown.

The last Will & Testament of Symon Miller of the Freshes of Rappa aged Seaven and thirty yeares or hereabout being of true and perfect memory doe in the first place commit my Soule unto God as a Mercifull Creator relying upon Jesus Christ my Redeemer by whose precious blood I hope to be saved, I commit my Body to the earth to be decently buried I doe will and

Item I give unto my Sonn, Symon Miller, halfe the devidend of land I now live on to him and his heires for ever. Any my Son Symon Miller, to cleare and plant as he shall think fitting in his Mothers Life time upon the said Devidend excepting the Plantation. And Further I give to my Son, Symon, a sorrill Mare with a white blaze on the face and all her increase to him forever. And in case I dye it is my will that my Son, Symon be sent the next five years for England.

Item I give and bequeath to my Sonn, William Miller, the other halfe divident of land to him and his heires forever and a Chessnut Mare with her Increase forever and full power

Item, I give to my daughter Isabella Miller, the other halfe of the devident at Pumans Inn to her and her heires for ever, and a black mare about two years old and her increase forever, The Mare is branded with LM on her near Buttock.

Item I give unto my daughter Margaret Miller, two hundred acres of land on back of my land adjoyning to Doctor Reynolds to her and her heires for ever and a brown mare branded LM with her increase for ever.

And Last of all I leave my wife full Executrix, and the rest of my Estate I give my wife to bring up my chilredn and to be at her disposing after my decease my debts and other my estate to be devided equally betwixt my children.

It is my will that the three Mares given to my son will and my son John and my daughter Susan that the foales they go with all shall goe into the stock and if any of them being a Mare foale it is to be given to my wifes son ANTHONY PROSSER and if they doe bring a mare foale my wife as she thinkgs fitting is to dispose of so much of the stock to purchase her sonn Anthony a mare foale. And all the male increase of all the smares, except my son Symon to goe into ye said former stiock till my children come to the age of fourteen then male
and female of the children to have ye full increase and if any of these children dy before they come of lawfull age then that estate land or mare to be equally devided among the survivors and if any of the childrens mare dy then my wife is to by out of the said stock to make good the same.

And to the sons of Mr Prosser every one of them are to have a heifer delivered to them one after anoth when they come ti eighteen years of age to be delived by executors after my decease.

Item I give unto my wife Margaret Miller the plantation and houses I not live in during her natural life. And in case she should mary one that should lett the house and orchard goe to Ruin then she is to return to her thirds accouding And I make James Ashton overseer over my estate and children and the overseer Jas Ashton to dispose of the children at sixteen years of age as he shall think fitt but in case the said Mr James Ashton dyeth en the children to be at their own disposing if they lie to goe to any handy craft trade they have a mind unto.

Impr: it is agreed that what Servants the sd JONES shall from time to time send to the abovesaid land their first purchase whether it be in England or here in the Country shall be by the said JONES declared and that HENRY BENSON doe agree to pay the one halfe of the purchase unto CADWALLADER JONES or his Order.
Secondly it is agreed that what Hoggs the said JONES shall send that I HENRY BENSON to be accountable unto the said JONES for the one halfe part of the Hoggs as are actuall sold
Thirdly what Cattle the said JONES alsoe shall send if HENRY BENSON have not so many of my own already that then I do Covenant to pay Mr. JONES for the one halfe as abovesd
Fourthly I HENRY BENSON doe agree that if Mr. JONES sent two Mares up that then I pay for one of them as abovesd.
Fifth. It is agreed between I HENRY BENSON and I CADWALLADER JONES that the whole stock shall run upon the abovesaid land on Mr. JONES marke Vizt, two crops an overkeele in the right Eare and an underkeele in the left and it is agreed the increase of the Mares be branded on the said JONES his brand appropriated only to that Plantation. Sixth: It is agreed that what Nails and all Utensils whatsoever shall be at an equal charge between us, and alsoe all building of Tobacco Houses and a convenient Dwelling House.
Seventh that all Servants Cloaths or other necessarys belonging to them and if it happen at any time the said Plantation shall want Corne that then the said BENSON and the said JONES supply in every particular as abovesaid at an equal charge in form it is agreed that all moveables as well as the land upon the said land be equally and absolutely the Estate of HENRY BENSON and CADWALLADER JONES that the Copartnership upon the abovesaid Plantation be Irrevokably continued between us during our Lives but with this proviso it shall be Lawful either for HENRY BENSON or CAD JONES to devise by Will his equall part of the land only but also all the Estate between us or either of us shall think good and that till then there be no other division of our land by our heirs but that our heirs shall still keep equall Servants upon it by reason we were both at the charge of building.
Ninth : I CAD: JONES doe oblige myself my heirs to pay or cause to be paid to HENRY BENSON the just sum of Twelve pounds Sterling money of England and Seventeene shillings and six pence this being due unto HENRY BENSON for the one moiety of land and further I CAD: JONES doe agree to pay the above money as the said BENSON shall have occasion for allwayes the prmises to be understood that by reason we are Copartners that he the said BENSON bonafide be paid in Goods as they cost wheresoever purchased by me or my Order on money of England. as he the said BENSON shall think fit.
Tenth Now Know yee that I HENRY BENSON doe bind myself to sell unto CAD: JONES during our lives all the pduce of my share of my crops of tobacco from yeare to yeare at the rate of fourteene shillings a hundred to he paid me here in goods running no Adventure as they cost in England or in money in England wch I will and withall I do oblige myselfe to ordere my Tobacco as I shall have instructions from the said JONES or his Attorney and also I doe oblige myself to plant no other Tobacco upon the said land but sweet scented and I HENRY BENSON doe yet agree to give Mr. JONES or his Attorney an Envry every year of what particular goods I shall have occasion for and the over plus to lye still in my partner JONES his hands untill I have occasion to draw it out and I doe further agree that if it happens that I send a parcel! of goods and they casualty miscarry at Sea that it shall not be lawfull for me the said BENSON to sue the said JONES or his Attorney for that crops produce but to stay till the next and then to be paid for both together.
Eleventh: The said JONES doe agree to pay the said BENSON Fourteene shillings a hundred for his part of the Crop pvided the particulars in the Fourth article be performed. Twelvth: It is agreed by me HENRY BENSON that what hoggs horses or mares cattle shall make sale of I doe give a just account of the whole to Mr, JONES or his Attorney and the pduce to be equally divided netween us.
Thirteenth. I HENRY BENSON and I Capt. JONES doe grant that upnn the five and Twentieth of March each year during our lives there be a just account either betweene me CAD: JONES or my Attorney wth my Carpenter HENRY BENSON of all things whatsoever on both acted or done in the aforegoing yeare. KNOW ALL MEN by these prsents that I JOHN GRIFFIN of the Parish of Kingston in the County of GLOCESTER, Shipwright, doe by these presents sell and this day have delivered a BARKE called "The Humble Servant" about fifty odd tunns with all appurtenances fitted as to Carpenters work now Riding at an anchor in BLACKWATER CREEKE for the value of One hundred and forty pounds Sterl. money of England in hand reced from Col. CADWALLETHER JONES of Rappa: County Gent., for and in value whereof the abovesd money I the said GRIFFIN have this day freely sold the above BARKE, "the Humble Servant, "to the use of the abovesaid JONES his heires forever. Samuel de Champlain prepared a map dating from 1632 that shows the Blue Ridge valleys. Traders and trapper from the Virginia colony made it to the Blue Ridge and beyond by 1650. A Dr. John Lederer of Hamburg, Germany mentioned the Shenandoah Valley in his diary of 1670. Col. Cadwallader Jones was apparently the first official explorer of the Shenandoah Valley for the British in 1673 and Alexander Spotswood followed him in 1716. However, by 1707, Germans were drifting down into the Shenandoah Valley south of the Potomac from Pennsylvania.
