- Hugh Sterling was born ca. 1720/25 perhaps on Ireland. He was the son of Martha Rankin. His father died before or shortly after his birth. Martha Rankin came to Boston, Mass. in 1722 from Northern Ireland with her sisters, and her father, Hugh Rankin. There she married James Doak. Hugh Sterling appears first on public record on Nov. 12, 1747 when he was a witness to a deed of James Doak in Londonderry, N.H. He married early in 1752, Isabel Stark (b. 1726), daughter of Archibald and Eleanor Nichols Stark, who were among the Scot settlers of Derryfield, N.H. He and Isabel had eight children born ca. 1752 through 1767 in Chester, Derryfield and Conway, New Hampshire. Descendants live in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, New York and elsewhere.
