- Obituary from New Braunfels Herald - December 29, 1916
One of Comal County's long time residents passed away forever, when Mr. Christian Kunkel, of Mission Valley departed this life on Christmas Day, December 25th, 1916. The deceased had been suffering for many years from nervous affection and had been confined to his bed for the last 10 months, his death therefore was not unexpected and may be regarded as a relief from long endured sufferance.
Coincidentally his death occurred on the same memorable day of his wedding, 61 years ago. He was born in 1829, in Wenglewo, Province of Posen, Germany, and came to Texas with his family in 1856, soon thereafter moving to Mission Valley, where he was a successful farmer. His wife, (nee Juliana Fechner) died in 1892, and a son John, in 1908.
The survivors, of the immediate family are: three sons, Fred, Emil and Carl Kunkel; one sister, Mrs. Friedrich Heidrich, a ** half-sister, Mrs. Caroline Beyer, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Interment took place at the family grave yard at Mission Valley, Rev. Morhninweg conducting the funeral service.

** She is mentioned as a "half-sister" to Christian Kunkel in his 1916 Comal Co. obituary. But it should be noted that "half-sister" is not entirely accurate. When Christoph, the father of her brothers John, Christian, and Gottlieb, died in 1836, Anna Rosina Gall married Christoph's brother, Gottlieb, and so there was the same Kunkel and Gall blood running through the "half-sister" Carolina's veins as there was running through her brothers.

| Notes |
- Christian Kunkel is one of four siblings who emigrated at different times to Texas from the small village of Wenglewo, Posen, Prussia. The births are recorded in the records of the Evangelische Kirche Pudewitz (Kr. Posen Ost) Kirchenbuch, 1787-1874.
The oldest, John Kunkel, Sr, (Memorial #10380946) appears on the 1860 Bastrop Co., TX census with daughter Wilhelmina Ottilie Kunkel, born 1854, in Prussia and daughter Augusta, born 1857, in Bastrop Co., Texas, so his arrival apparently occurred between 1854-1857.
His brother Gottlieb (Memorial #69724225), wife Augusta Krueger Kunkel, and sister Anna Carolina Kunkel Beyer (Memorial #69722780), arrived in Galveston, on 16 Dec 1860 aboard the bark Gaston
